PCR  testing is the Governments Gold standard when it comes to Covid-19 testing and the length of time to produce the results is underpinned by the scrutiny and complex nature of analysis involved. 

PCR tests are designed to diagnose individuals with an active infection i.e. those currently infected with SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Unlike antibody-based tests which detect the presence of antibodies produced by the body’s immune system in response to the virus and indicate previous infection, PCR tests detect the virus’s genetic material – specifically RNA fragments – and are used to diagnose a current infection.

Test to Release

If you have recently arrived from outside of the UK, current government guidance states that you must self-isolate for 10 days upon your return. Our Test to Release Scheme offers you the opportunity to pay for a private COVID-19 test 5 full days after your UK arrival. 

​

If your test comes back negative, you no longer have to self-isolate. However, if you test positive you must continue to self-isolate for another 10 days. This should be calculated as 10 days from when you took the test, or from when you first started to show symptoms, whichever came first.

Day 2 and Day 8 Tests for UK International Arrivals

As of February 15th, people travelling to the United Kingdom from outside the Common Travel Area and not travelling from a red list country must:

​

·         Self-isolate for 10 days;

·         Take a compulsory RT-PCR home test on day 2 and on day 8 of their self-isolation (Travel Test Package);

·         Follow National Lockdown Rules.

Home Testing Kit

This antigen test can be performed at home by yourself. Antigen tests detect viral RNA. This requires taking a swab from the nose and throat and then analysing the specimen in the lab using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). You may see these tests referred to as PCR tests.

Covid Rapid Antigen Test

Rapid antigen testing is used for both point of care testing and Fit to Fly certification for France, Italy and America, among other countries. (Up to date guidance regarding entry requirements for countries outside of the UK can be found on the Government website).
